Volnay Wines

If you ever have the privilege of visiting the commune of Volnay, you may leave forever changed. The veritable oceanic expanse of grapevine rows is truly breath-taking, a sight straight out of classic fantasy novels. The chirping birds sing of this region’s majesty, and that song echoes within the consistently glorious reds they produce. If this is the first time you’re sampling a bottle of Volnay, take a deep breath, and prepare to have your life changed.

Without a doubt, these wines are some of the most feminine in the entire surrounding area. Their fresh, seductive aroma will leave you infatuated for days on end, long after the initial passionate kiss. Expect to long for the sweet caress of violets, juicy cherries and gooseberry, as the spices and prune echo in your mouth, making your tongue shiver. No one can sample these amazing wines and remain neutral, as even the harshest critics will be taken aback by the texture and mouth-watering flavor combination, stunned and perplexed.

We would completely understand if you wanted to own dozens of Volnay bottles after just one sampling, one romantic fling with the excellent grape nectar of this appellation. To that end, we’ve prepared a selection of amazing, stand-out Volnay reds for your perusal, so that you may rediscover your love of wine in a very visceral, emotional way. Feel the butterflies in your stomach again as the wine tugs at your heartstrings, and dazzle your friends and romantic partners. No collection is complete without a little Volnay, and these bottles will be talked about for decades to come. Essential.

2010 Pousse D'Or Volnay Clos De La Bousse D'Or, Burgundy Red

Bright, dark red. Very ripe, musky aromas of red berries, cherry, spices, mocha and underbrush. Sappy and supple, with harmonious acidity giving shape to the seamless red fruit flavors. Quite suave and rich but not at all thick or heavy. Finishes with very fine tannins and superb length and lift. Owner Patrick Landanger told me that he has pulled out 40% of the old virused vines in this vineyard since the 2009 harvest, as they were yielding very little crop.Vinous Media | 93 VM(Domaine Pousse d’Or Volnay "Clos de la Bousse d’Or" 1er 1er Cru Red) This is slightly more complex if not more elegant with a more floral-infused nose that includes rose petal and violets on the plum and black cherry infused nose. There is excellent concentration to the detailed, intense and delicious flavors that possess that beguiling sense of underlying tension that carries over to the mouth coating and suave yet firm and enduring finish. 2010 Marquis d'Angerville Volnay Fremiets, Burgundy Red

The 2010 Volnay Les Fremiets is all crushed rocks, graphite, minerals and wet stones. With time in the glass the fruit gradually begins to emerge. Sweet red fruit, mint and freshly cut flowers are some of the nuances in the glass, but in the end the Fremiets remains decidedly cool and inward. A pointed, chiseled finish continues the theme to its logical conclusion. Readers will need to be especially patient here.Vinous Media | 93-95 VM(Domaine Marquis d’Angerville Volnay "Frémiets" 1er 1er Cru Red) This is at once cooler, fresher and more elegant than the Clos des Angles with its ultra-pure red pinot and extract of stone suffused nose. There is fine richness and excellent mid-palate volume that buffers the otherwise firm but ripe tannins before terminating in a lacy and chalky finish. The minerality is so strong that this has an almost Chablis-like salinity to it. (Drink starting 2020)Burghound | 91-93 BH(Volnay “Fremiets”- Domaine Marquis d’Angerville) The 2010 d’Angerville Fremiets had finished up its malo in the middle of October and had not yet been racked. The nose offers up a lovely and sappy mélange of red and black cherries, a touch of blood orange, lovely minerality, vinesmoke, a touch of coffee and a stylish base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish and rock solid at the core, with ripe tannins, good focus and balance and a long, tangy finish. A very good example of the vintage chez d’Angerville. 2020 Antonin Guyon Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chenes

Richly intense high tones of fresh cranberries, rhubarb and peppercorn contribute to a voluminous nose of overripe strawberries and freshly picked cherries. The palate is round and textured with ripe cherries, quince, limestone and salt, which leisurely integrate along its long finish. Cellar through 2028.Wine Enthusiast | 94 WEDelivers vibrant acidity that delineates black currant and blackberry fruit flavors, with floral, sandalwood, vanilla and earth accents. Features dense, fine-grained tannins and a finish that stretches out, revealing echoes of fruit and spices. Best from 2026 through 2040. 400 cases made, 26 cases imported.Wine Spectator | 93 WSMuch more subtle oak influence is present on the equally spicy and even more floral-suffused nose that blends notes of red raspberry with those of tea and dark cherry. There is a lovely inner mouth perfume to the energetic, sleek and tautly muscular flavors that possess excellent volume before terminating in a moderately austere, long and notably more complex finale. This is excellent though like all fine examples of Clos des Chênes, extended patience will be a virtue.Burghound | 91-94 BH
