Volnay Wines

If you ever have the privilege of visiting the commune of Volnay, you may leave forever changed. The veritable oceanic expanse of grapevine rows is truly breath-taking, a sight straight out of classic fantasy novels. The chirping birds sing of this region’s majesty, and that song echoes within the consistently glorious reds they produce. If this is the first time you’re sampling a bottle of Volnay, take a deep breath, and prepare to have your life changed.

Without a doubt, these wines are some of the most feminine in the entire surrounding area. Their fresh, seductive aroma will leave you infatuated for days on end, long after the initial passionate kiss. Expect to long for the sweet caress of violets, juicy cherries and gooseberry, as the spices and prune echo in your mouth, making your tongue shiver. No one can sample these amazing wines and remain neutral, as even the harshest critics will be taken aback by the texture and mouth-watering flavor combination, stunned and perplexed.

We would completely understand if you wanted to own dozens of Volnay bottles after just one sampling, one romantic fling with the excellent grape nectar of this appellation. To that end, we’ve prepared a selection of amazing, stand-out Volnay reds for your perusal, so that you may rediscover your love of wine in a very visceral, emotional way. Feel the butterflies in your stomach again as the wine tugs at your heartstrings, and dazzle your friends and romantic partners. No collection is complete without a little Volnay, and these bottles will be talked about for decades to come. Essential.

2005 Pousse D'Or Volnay Clos De La Bousse D'Or

The 2005 Volnay Clos de la Bousse d’Or offers scents of plum, black raspberry, Asian spices, soy, noble fungus and wood smoke. In the mouth, it delivers tart (though ripe) black raspberry fruit with black truffle undertones and subtle spice and chalk, while managing to display a flattering creaminess. Fascinating fungal, fruit skin and mineral notes vie for attention in the finish. This strikes an ideal balance between flattering fat and underlying structure. Figure to cellar it for at least 12-15 years.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 92 RPGood ruby-red. Superripe but reticent nose hints at blueberry and licorice, accented by orange rind and pepper. There’s a pronounced earthy underbrush component to the black plum fruit. Strong soil tones here. Finishes with serious, building tannins. This one needs patience.Burghound | 91-93 BHGood ruby-red. 2022 Domaine Hubert Lignier Volnay, Burgundy Red

Laurent Lignier has farmed a quarter-hectare of village Volnay since the 2020 vintage, split evenly between the rocky Ez Blanches at the top of the slope above the Clos des Chênes and Ez Echarts with deeper clay soils below Roncerets. The combination is delightful, with violet-scented blackberry fruit, firm tannic grip and rewarding density. The grapes are partly destemmed and given a cold soak before fermentation with a combination of punching down and pumping over. They will be bottled in the spring without fining or filtration.Decanter | 93 DECThis is also presently quite firmly reduced and unreadable in this condition. The relatively finely textured middleweight flavors also possess a succulent mid-palate that contrasts somewhat with the moderately austere and lingering if noticeably warm finish that isn’t subtle.Burghound | 87-90 BH
