2001 Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva

I have to cut to the chase here.  This wine is spectacular!

From Rioja, Spain, the 95 point 2001 Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva is packed with red fruit (cranberries and cherries) that can be detected immediately.  It's a smooth, medium bodied wine and even has some spice (cinnamon) too.  The right acid and tannins is present, which will lend to its longevity, but everything is rounded and delicious here.

Tondonia is one of Lopez de Heredia's premier vineyards, one that they say is "the bodega's most famous vineyard and product." The 2001 Tondonia Reserve is alive and will be for quite some time.  Not only is it ready to be enjoyed now, but it's going to be great for at least 15 more years!  95 points and $39.99 - why would you not?

Lopez de Heredia was founded by Don Rafael Lopez de Heredia y Landeta in 1877 and in a very old world way, they are known for not getting caught up in all the modern technology some winemakers have adopted.  Their winemaking is very much artisanal.  To control temperature during fermentation, they say, "We open doors and windows."  This place will hardly even recognize that malolactic fermentation exists as an option let alone consider using it as a practice.  Neal Martin of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate said, "I have adored, indeed occasionally worshiped, the wines of Lopez de Heredia for many years, so I am not ashamed to admit that visiting both their vineyard and their winery was a pilgrimage."

I always love knowing these kinds of details because I think wine should be thought of and respected this way.  Of course, we have the science behind it, but places like Lopez de Heredia are standing firm on maintaining the art of winemaking with the highest of standards.  Technology is for Silicon Valley!

There are two words Lopez de Heredia has lived by since Don Rafael's days:
Professionalism
Ethic

Most importantly, the wine is good; even extraordinary, and this artful and reverent approach, led by winemaker Mercedes Lopez de Heredia, is exactly why it will impress you now and for years to come!

Suggested music accompaniment:
Paco de Lucía
Luzia

Paco's music is just as alive as this wine - a perfect pairing!
