This Spanish delight is the product of old vines and concrete aging. Raspberry and licorice were the most obvious elements to my nose. It comes from Terra Alta, a remote region in south eastern Catalonia (on the border of Aragon). The vines are 400-530m (1312-1738 ft) above sea level. As the posterior label reads, the soil type was clayey with high calcareous content. This is from where the chalky and limestone minerality is derived. What the Spanish call the Cerc, a northwesterly wind, and the Garbi, a sea breeze, help to lower temperatures in the winter and moderate the hot summer. The Cerc and the Garbi lend to a steadiness that helps the winemaker avoid having to sort out extremes in weather during the growing season.
You will want to pair the 2011 Herencia Altes Garnatxa Negra similarly to how you would pair a medium-full bodied Cabernet Sauvignon - with full flavored dishes. Foods like red meat and game with earthy or even mushroom type sauces will go well with this wine.
