One of the best parts of trying great wines is finding not just a wine that you love but wine from a specific location.
I love Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley and there is plenty of information about where most "Napa Cabs" come from within Napa. But the name Napa carries most of the credibility so most of us usually don't dig much deeper.
It's the same thing with the great Tuscan wines of Brunello. That's often all you need to know - it's a Brunello.
But Burgundy is a different story; as maddening as the break-down of Burgundy can be it is still a thrill to realize that you enjoy not just the whites of Burgundy but that you prefer Chassagne Montrachet to Puligny Montrachet. I suspect this is why devout Burgundy lovers tend to be a little more, dare-I-say, "particular" than the rest of us. They may have a point. They don't just have a favorite wine from Burgundy. They have a favorite wine from a specific region, from a specific producer, from a specific vineyard.
And if you like the reds or whites of Burgundy, sooner or later you will realize that you love something very specific. And you may not even know it! A few years back I was late to a staff tasting and as I walked in one of my co-workers said, "You're going to love this white, it's a classic Meursault!" Being a little pre-occupied I just said, "Great". As we were finishing that bottle of Meursault that I did, in fact, love, I asked my co-worker how he knew I would love this bottle. And he said, "Dude, you love Meursault! You try it first at big tastings, you seek it out on wine lists and you buy it from here whenever we get new ones in." I hadn't even realized that until then - one of favorite white wines is great Meursault. I had found "my wine." Great Meursault has so much going on; the aromas range from white peach to honey and almond. The gush of flavors are on the best side of citrus, lemon and candied nuts. It possesses a richness and thickness that isn't heavy or cloying and the finish is fresh, long and bright.
Fortunately for those of you that like Meursault we always have a few great wines available. Two of our best are from Vincent Girardin (it turns out I have a favorite producer too):
2007 V. Girardin Meursault Les Narvaux - 91 RP - $44.99/ bottle: Just had this last Saturday and it was great! A sweet, citrus and lemon nose that turned to a beam of lemony grassiness in the mouth. Very thick and creamy with a lush finish that went on for a minute plus.
2006 V. Girardin Meursault Charmes du Dessus - 92 WS - $69.99/ bottle: This one is on tap for this weekend so I'll leave you with the Wine Spectator review: "Concentrated flavors of peach, vanilla, lime and mineral interplay with the rich texture and lively structure. Very dry on the finish, with a chalklike feel..." I bet I'm going to love this one too!
