While Malbec has a history in France prior to the 20th Century and even the United States prior to Prohibition, Argentina now is the country most tied to Malbec. Specifically, the Mendoza province is known for their highly rated Malbec wine and is the largest wine producing area in South America.  Mendoza is also known for their olive oil.

I recently decided to try one of our new arrival wines, a high value Malbec from the 2010 vintage - Cobos Malbec El Felino (Mendoza, Argentina): $15.99/bottle and 91 points from Wine Advocate December 2011. This wine is 100% Malbec. Interestingly, it is also the product of a collaboration between the highly regarded California winemaker Paul Hobbs, and winemakers Andrea Marchiori and Luis Barraud. The talented Paul Hobbs is owner of Paul Hobbs Winery and is well known for his Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays and Cabernets.

Upon opening this wine, I noticed subtle hints of rose. The texture is the first thing I realized as I tasted this fine Malbec. It's quite lush; almost velvety with purple fruit and a deep purple color. I also immediately detected the high quality of this wine.

More floral scents and more depth became apparent by the time a second round was poured. Some earthy tones and cherry came out as well. The finish was smooth and lasting. This wine was fine without decanting, but would have been a little better if decanted for an hour or so.

The Cobos Malbec El Felino was hand harvested March 26 - April 22. After the fermentation and maceration processes, it was barrel aged in French and American oak for nine months. Finally, it was bottled in March 2011?check out the edgy label!

Admittedly, Malbec has not been a common "go to" wine for me prior to tasting this, but now I will be inserting the Felino into my regular rotation. It will drink through 2017, but it is not too soon to enjoy it now as your everyday house wine. At this spectacular price/points ratio, it's really a can't miss selection! This $15.99 Malbec is fresh and very enjoyable to drink. Add it to your collection of drinking wines today!
