Juan Antonio Ponce stands alone as the leader of Manchuela and as the master of the Bobal grape.
Manchuela, a lesser-known Spanish wine region that is inland from Valencia, specializes in the Bobal variety which has thick skins and was originally used for bulk wine.
However, in the hands of a maestro like Ponce, it provides genuinely attractive fruit character of raspberry, black cherry and blueberry to the fore, with a luxuriantly silky mouthfeel and discretely persuasive yet perfectly ripe tannins of licorice, black tea and cocoa powder – as well as a perfect level of acidity to pair with food.
Ponce works biodynamically in the vineyard. The vineyard for the P.F. bottling was planted 95 years ago, and it produces only 750 cases of wine, most of which stays in Spain.
Knowing this is a benchmark example of Bobal from the excellent 2018 vintage, we took the entire remaining allocation for our region. This wine is drinking great today through 2028. We have very limited quantities remaining, so act quickly on this incredible value.
