White Wines

Very few drinks are as aesthetically pleasing as a glowing, crisp glass of liquid gold. This appearance grants a very real sense of luxury and richness to white wines, as they can almost seem like something that only exists in myth, a golden drink that is served only to gods and emperors. Their refreshing nature is appreciated all around the globe, making them an ideal choice for a hot summer afternoon, perhaps an outdoor meal with your family in the countryside. The zesty acidity of a lot of white wines and their ability to leave your mouth dry and begging for more makes it very hard to stop at one glass.

There are many blends to choose from when it comes to fine, crisp white wine, each offering a unique moment of satisfaction as you explore the layers of flavor and texture. A bottle of oaked Chardonnay (the world’s most popular white wine) can steal your heart with a rich, succulent vanilla flavor and compete for your attention with any gourmet dish you can imagine. Meanwhile, a glass of the Italian classic Pinot Grigio introduces a beautiful composition of lemon, green apple, and lime, bringing a strong Mediterranean charm wherever you may live.

White wines offer something for everyone, and the journey to find your perfect white wine is as exciting and emotional as the journey to find a soulmate. It’s part of our mission statement to help make these perfect matches by showing you some of the best white wines the world has to offer, to make your decisions easier and ultimately more fulfilling. Few pleasures in this world can compete with that of finally discovering a lifelong friend in a cool, refreshing bottle of fine wine. Let’s enjoy them together.

2022 Domaine William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Cote Bouguerots

The very steep aspect of Côte Bouguerots is highlighted by a much greater emphasis on minerality than Fevre’s Bougros. This is a grand cru is every way - so much drive on the palate with plenty of extract, concentration, salinity and length. Certain to keep very well but this is also surprisingly approachable early on. DIdier Seguier says it’s likely to close down after 18-24 months but this is clearly a fine example with masses of potential.Decanter | 96 DECThe 2022 Chablis Bougros Côte Bouguerots Grand Cru has a clean and precise bouquet with hints of wild peach, apricot blossom, Mirabelle and crushed stone. The palate is well-balanced with a very harmonious entry, blackcurrant leaf and spice, crushed stone and what feels like plenty of extract on the finish. This has great potential, but afford it time in your cellar.Vinous Media | 93-95 VMThis is the coolest and most restrained of this group of 2022s with its elegant aromas of prominent mineral reduction, lemon-lime, spice and oyster shell. There is almost painful intensity to the intensely stony and strikingly well-detailed larger-bodied yet still beautifully refined flavors that display huge length on the impeccably well-balanced finale. Like the Preuses, this is very classy and built to repay extended keeping.Burghound | 93-95 BH

2022 Domaine William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos

Small yield, very concentrated, with masses of density on the palate. Plenty of drive and energy but has finesse to balance out the power. White peach fruit characters, vibrant acidity and a pronounced mineral, salty finish. Very long future ahead. Fèvre owns 4.1ha of the 25ha total within Les Clos. Its plots situated on the top of the hill, with 50% of the vines planted by William Fèvre’s father in the 1940s and 1950s.Decanter | 95 DECThis is aromatically quite similar to the Côte Bouguerots but with more floral influence. The rich, big-bodied and tautly muscular flavors are also seemingly chiseled from Kimmeridgian, all wrapped in a wonderfully persistent, very dry, balanced and stony finale. This is also extremely impressive and equally built to repay extended cellaring.Burghound | 93-95 BHThe 2022 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru has a surprisingly primal bouquet with gooseberry, melon, fruits de mer and citrus peel, with more oyster shell scents developing as it opens, though never quite achieving the flair of the Valmur. The palate is well-balanced, steely and strict, with fine intensity and a saline finish. But it doesn’t quite have the precision of Fevre’s best cuvées at the moment.Vinous Media | 91-93 VM

2022 Domaine William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses

Beautiful mix of richness, grace and drive. As always with Fèvre’s Les Preuses, this is elegant, long-living and fine. Ultra-stylish and very mineral. From two sections of vines. One situated low down on Les Preuses next to Vincent Dauvissat’s plot, on the flatter part facing south, the other on deeper soils, with both adding richness and totalling 2.5ha.Decanter | 96 DECA toasty nose features notes of smoky grilled shellfish, pear and algae. The dense and equally serious larger-scaled flavors don’t have quite the same power yet they are clearly more refined on the markedly bitter citrus zest finish that displays outstanding length. This is exceptionally classy and while it too could use more depth, that is all but assured if given a chance.Burghound | 92-95 BHSuch a fresh lime infused colour. The bouquet shows the soft creamy riches that you can find here in Les Preuses. There is plenty of bulk but the hectare plot which drops down into Vaudésir gives the mineral tension. A little lime and lemon coats the tongue at the finish. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: June 2023.Jasper Morris | 93-95 JMThe 2022 Chablis Les Preuses Grand Cru is not unlike the Valmur on the nose: backward and a little sultry in style, with faint touches of crustacea coming through. The palate is more generous with orchard fruit, hints of apricot and wild peach, and fine acidity. It is very harmonious but without quite the same complexity as the Valmur on the finish. Still, this should give many years of drinking pleasure.Vinous Media | 92-94 VM

2022 Henri Boillot Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru

Powerful, dense, and supple, the Corton Charlemagne from Boillot is an impressive wine with aromas of ripe apple, quince and apricot, floral notes, and butter. The grapes are sourced from parcels in Aloxe and Pernand; Boillot purchases the fruit as grapes, and his team does the harvest and the pressing. The result is classic Corton-Charlemagne in style that will open properly in three to five years and should age for 20 beyond that.Decanter | 96 DECThe 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a blend of fruit from Aloxe-Corton (75%) and Pernand-Vergelesses (25%), a combination that works well in giving the wine balance. There’s quite a bit of phenolic intensity and youthful austerity here. Herbs, crushed rocks, graphite, mint and citrus confit build nicely. I very much admire the vibrancy here, even if the 2022 remains a bit unyielding today. - Antonio GalloniVinous Media | 93-95 VM

2022 Jean Paul & Benoit Droin Chablis Grand Cru Hommage a Louis

The 2022 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru Hommage à Louis has quite a malic, green apple and Anjou pear-scented nose that unfurls beautifully in the glass. 2022 Jean Paul & Benoit Droin Chablis Grand Cru Les Grenouilles

The 2022 Chablis Grenouilles Grand Cru has a more low-key nose than the impressive 2021, well-defined with crushed limestone, Granny Smiths and peach skin aromas. The palate is well-balanced, with a fine bead of acidity counterbalancing the richness. Tensile, quite saline, building gradually towards a very cohesive finish. Refined and sophisticated.Vinous Media | 92-94 VM

2022 Jean Paul & Benoit Droin Chablis Grand Cru Valmur

The 2022 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru has a very aromatic bouquet with apple blossom, white peach, wet stone and light praline scents - complex. 2022 Jean Paul & Benoit Droin Chablis Grand Cru Vaudesir

The 2022 Chablis Vaudésir Grand Cru is very fragrant on the nose with white peach, white chocolate and hints of wet stone scents, like a Vaillons-plus. The palate is well-defined, taut and fresh, with crisp acidity and good depth, but it starts to clam up towards the finish. Patience will be required, but there is no doubting the caliber of this Grand Cru.Vinous Media | 92-94 VM

2022 Patrick Piuze Chablis Grand Cru Blanchots

The 2022 Chablis Grand Cru Blanchots is very promising, bursting with aromas of orange zest, citrus blossom, buttery pastry and fresh hazelnuts. Full-bodied, satiny and layered, it’s elegantly textural, with attractive mid-palate depth and purity.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 93 RPThe 2022 Chablis Blanchot Grand Cru is blessed with one of Piuze’s most enticing aromatics—gorgeous minty yellow plum mixed with jasmine and dried honey. The palate is well balanced with yellow plum (again), stem ginger, white peach and a hint of lemongrass. Very harmonious and persistent - this is an excellent Blanchot.Vinous Media | 93 VMSubtle if easily perceptible wood can be found on the airy and floral aromas of sea water, citrus and a hint of wet stone. The rich and solidly concentrated medium-bodied flavors exude an almost palpable minerality on the impressively long finale. This is notably more refined than the Bougros though it too could use better depth but with at least a decade of upside development potential, more will almost certainly develop.Burghound | 93 BHPale colour, a full and ripe nose, the white flowers are entwined with a little honeysuckle. Fresh enough on the palate with a fine white fruit thread, sinuous yet precise, and with great length. A fine and typical rendition of Blanchots. Drink from 2027-2037. 2022 patrick piuze chablis grand cru bougros France White

Offering up aromas of citrus oil, crisp stone fruit, white flowers and buttery pastry, Piuze’s 2022 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros is medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with a bright spine of acidity and a mouthwateringly saline finish. 2022 patrick piuze chablis grand cru les clos Burgundy White

Piuze’s 2022 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos is a powerful, muscular wine, mingling notions of orange and mandarin with toasted nuts, dried white flowers and iodine in an incipiently complex bouquet. Full-bodied, broad and layered, with notable structuring dry extract and a long, resonant finish, it’s quintessential Les Clos.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 94 RP

2022 Patrick Piuze Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses

The 2022 Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses is also rather rich and textural this year, mingling notes of sweet orchard fruit and confit orange with notions of toasted nuts and buttery pastry. Medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy, with lively acids and a saline finish, I’d expect this to take on more cut and tension by the time it’s bottled.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 93 RPThe 2022 Chablis Les Preuses Grand Cru has an elegant bouquet with apricot purée, yellow flowers and light Mirabelle aromas, with hints of crushed stone emerging with time. The palate is well-balanced, with a slightly viscous opening matched by a silver bead of acidity. The salinity comes through right on the finish. Excellent.Vinous Media | 93 VMA restrained nose grudgingly offers up a blend of green fruit, citrus, iodine, shellfish and a hint of quinine. There is again fine volume to the beautifully texture and more refined medium-bodied flavors that exude evident minerality on the equally long if not quite as complex finale. Lovely and I very much like the balance that should permit it to age gracefully.Burghound | 93 BH

n/v michel fallon ozanne grand cru blanc de blancs brut Champagne

The May 2017 disgorgement of Fallon’s NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Ozanne is showing brilliantly, wafting from the glass with aromas of citrus oil, crisp yellow orchard fruit, freshly baked bread, toasted nuts, candied peel and honeycomb. Full-bodied, vinous and concentrated, it’s layered and textural, with a bright spine of acidity, a pearly enlivening mousse and a long, intensely sapid finish. Its combination of power and tension makes this the finest wine I’ve tasted from Fallon to date. Of course, finding any of the thousand or so bottles released every year is next to impossible, but readers able to track one or two down are in for a treat.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 95 RPThe NV Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Ozanne is laced with gorgeous scents of pastry, brioche, citrus, white flowers and yellow orchard fruit. Warm, oxidative tones add breadth and volume, but the wine remains weightless, impeccable and pure. The delineated, crystalline finish leaves a lasting impression. This is a super-impressive showing from a producer who appears to have a very bright future. Ozanne is the old, historical name by which Avize was known prior to 796. n/v r.h. coutier brut rose Champagne

(NV R.H. Coutier Brut Cuvée Rosé Grand Cru Rosé) A moderately fruity yet beautifully complex nose speaks of a variety of red berries along with hints of green apple, pear and yeast. With air the flavors really open up to reveal the same outstanding complexity as displayed by the nose along with excellent verve and a very fine mousse, all wrapped in a tangy and dry finish that just avoids a trace of austerity. As to drinkability, this is actually delicious now, though those that prefer their rosés with a bit of age could cellar this with confidence as well. In a word, terrific and it also offers simply wonderful value. (Drink starting 2013)Burghound | 93 BHThe NV Brut Rose Grand Cru would be a highlight in virtually every other cellar, but here the competition is quite stiff. This release is built on the 2008 vintage, and it is the personality of the year that comes through most. Expressive red berries, flowers, mint and crushed rocks burst from the glass as this energetic wine shows off its pure vibrancy and class. Coutier’s NV Brut Rose is another clear winner. Disgorged May 2012. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016.Coutier is one of my favorite among Champagne’s smaller houses. The wines always deliver tons of quality at reasonable prices. The estate is located in Ambonnay, a village with a reputation for broad-shouldered Champagnes. Coutier lists disgorgement dates on their corks, which is better than nothing but far from consumer-friendly. This is the last year I will review the Coutier NV wines until disgorgement dates appear on back labels.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 92 RPA pure note of macerated cherry is backed by a firm acidity in this lively rosé Champagne, while a subtle, smoky underpinning and hints of pink grapefruit peel and grated ginger ride the creamy bead. Disgorged December 2019. Drink now through 2023. 500 cases made, 150 cases imported.Wine Spectator | 91 WSNo written review provided. | 91 W&SThe NV Brut Rosé Grand Cru is bright, airy and effusive, all of which give it tremendous charm. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, spice and dried cherry fruit all take shape effortlessly. This attractive, understated Rosé is full of charm, but also looks to be a near-term drinker. This release is 85% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Noir (including a portion of still red wine), based on 2016 with 40% reserve wines. Dosage is 6 grams per liter. Disgorged: February, 2021.Antonio Galloni | 90 AG(NV R. H. Coutier Brut Rosé NV (Ambonnay)) The Coutier family’s bottling of Brut Rosé in the market today is from the base year of 2015, with forty percent of the blend composed of reserve wines. The cépages is eighty-five percent chardonnay and fifteen percent pinot noir and the wine was disgorged in December of 2019 and finished with a dosage of seven grams per liter. All of the pinot noir in the blend is still red wine. The new release offers up a beautiful bouquet of cherries, rhubarb, rye bread, chalky soil tones and orange zest in the upper register. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and youthfully zesty, with a good core of fruit and soil signature, frothy mousse and lovely length and grip on the nascently complex and youthful finish. This is still fairly primary and further bottle age will be nicely rewarded. (Drink between 2022-2035)John Gilman | 90+ JG
