    2010 Tessier 92RPIt is rare to find 2010 Bordeaux of this Pedigree at under $30. The 2010 Teyssier is an outstanding wine that is worth every penny and more.

    Teyssier is made by Jonathan Maltus, who is also the maker of the famous cult wine Le Dome. The 2010 Le Dome received a 100 point score from Robert Parker and sells for $240+. You can own a wine from the same vintage and estate for only $27.95.

    Maltus has become the winemaker to watch in Bordeaux. Chateau Teyssier is located in Vignonet, St. Emilion and dates back to 18th century. Jonathan and Lyn Maltus purchased the estate in 1994 and since then have improved the quality greatly. From hillside vineyards with a high granite component, the finest grapes are sourced to create this wonderful wine. The 2009 and 2010 were both stellar values, so when the 2011 finally arrived I was extremely excited to try a sample.

    Poderi Castellare di CastellinaThe purity of Cabernet Sauvignon – that is what Poderi Castellare di Castellina strives to bottle with their Coniale.

    Located on the hills of a natural amphitheater in the heart of Chianti Classico, their vineyard produces Sangioveto (the noble native version of Sangiovese) for three levels of Chianti and the basis of their flagship I Sodi Di San Niccolo, as well as other indigenous and French grapes. Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc do well here, but their Cabernet Sauvignon can truly be unique.

    Fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged for 18 months in 225 liter barriques, Coniale is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Not many wineries in Italy do that. Most create blends, either entirely of Bordeaux varietals or with Sangiovese, the basis for Super Tuscans.

    2010 Vie di Romans Sauvignon Blanc PiereIf the snow and ice of January and February have you dreaming of all things summer – like the light, white wines we associate with warm weather, sun and fun – consider a wine from Friuli! It is a region in Italy’s northeast corner bordering Austria and Slovenia known for the wide array of white wines produced. The winemakers there are a select group, all working on a smaller scale and able to concentrate entirely on the quality and diversity of their wines. The region is home to three DOCG titles, all for whites.

    One of these producers, Vie di Romans, has a family history of over a hundred years and has been managed for the last 35 or so by Gianfranco Gallo. Their Piere vineyard is nearly 20 acres at 33 meters elevation with well drained pebbly soil. The vine age averages 18 years and all of their whites are released two years after harvest.

    Let’s face it, this winter has been a rough one for most of us throughout the country and unless you plan on hitting the slopes, you’re probably sick of the snow.  Like me though, you probably try to enjoy your time huddled inside with some bottles of red wine.  And I couldn’t think of a more appropriate winery for the season than Snowden! 

    The Snowden ranch lies on the eastern slopes of the Napa Valley overlooking the towns of Rutherford and St. Helena.  The property was homesteaded in 1878, and the Snowden family has owned it since 1955.   In the 1980s they sold grapes to Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, and in the 1990s grapes from the property went to a number of other vintners, including Silver Oak Wine Cellars, Frank Family Vineyard, David Ramey, Viader, and Caymus Vineyards.  Beginning with the 1993 harvest, they began to save and use a portion of each harvest for the production of estate-specific family wines, gradually

    2000 Fombrauge Straight from the largest vineyard in St. Emilion comes this stunning bottle of 2000 Fombrauge that I recently had the pleasure of tasting with several close friends.  Immediately after opening it, I knew that we had an amazing bottle of Bordeaux on our hands. 

    A lighter wine with an oaky and sweet mid-palate, this fourteen-year-old Bordeaux (from the remarkable 2000 vintage, I might add) is drinking extremely well at the moment.  Ripe berries, chocolate, and oak dominate the nose only to give way to the sweet roller coaster finish.  Each glass is smoother than the last.

    Migliara - the Cortona Cru

    Migliara - the Cortona CruTuscany is the spiritual center of Sangiovese and the home to a handful of other indigenous varietals. It is also one of the first areas in Italy where wineries began to work strongly with international varietals, giving birth to the phrase Super Tuscan. With this spirit in mind, in 1988, Massimo d’Alessandro began studying soils and climates on a section of his family’s property in Cortona and experimented with various grapes for four years. It was determined that Syrah would work best in this area of Tuscany and from 1993 to 2002, Tenimenti Luigi d’Alessandro gradually planted 40 hectares to this grape.

    Il Bosco was the winery’s first flagship wine, a blend of the best grapes from the oldest vineyards on the estate. In 2000 however, it was decided to plant one ideal vineyard to be bottled separately, becoming the winery’s first true cru. Migliara is this vineyard and wine.
