  1. Baby Sassicaia - A Great Value for the Fall Season!

Baby Sassicaia - A Great Value for the Fall Season!

Baby SassicaiaWith the fall season in full swing now, we are all looking forward to the bounty of fall vegetables, roasted meat and vegetable dishes, and of course some great red wines to enjoy alongside. You have, no doubt, already received your Sokolin Fall Catalog and hopefully, you've had a chance to go through it and are already in the process of enjoying some of these great wines at your home.

We always come across several great wine values each year, and I'm happy to share one of these values with you. 2010 San Guido Guidalberto, priced at just $39.99/bottle, is a Super-Tuscan wine made from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. This wine offers a typical blend of Bordeaux grapes from the Tuscany region of Italy at an atypical price. This incredible blend is made by the great producer of Sassicaia, one of the most well known and sought after Super-Tuscan wines around. While Sassicaia usually sells for about $169 - $299 per bottle, depending on vintage, you can enjoy this amazing

  2. 2009 PSI - The Pingus Movement Back to the Land?

2009 PSI - The Pingus Movement Back to the Land?

Pingus MovementPSI is the third wine of one of Spain's most legendary producers, Dominio de Pingus. Pingus was established in the mid-1990s by Danish winemaker & visionary, Peter Sisseck. Dominio de Pingus was unexpectedly (and joyously!) put on the map in 1996 after the managing director of a UK wine company discovered the wine at the very end of a long and drawn out Bordeaux tasting. He then insisted that a Mr. Robert Parker try the wine. After a 96-100 point rating and receiving the back page of the Wine Advocate, the rest is winemaking history!

Fast Forward 10 years later to the birth of Sisseck's newest project: PSI, named after the 23rd letter of the Greek alphabet. This wine was produced with the intention to showcase the old-world vines of the Ribera del Duero, using biodynamic and organic farming practices. Sisseck essentially sought out to give back to the land and the small farmers who hadn't yet benefitted from the success of the Ribera del Duero by keeping the winemaking

  3. Two Incredible & Affordable Rieslings

    Two Incredible & Affordable Rieslings

Affordable Rieslings Last week, I was out west with a bunch of non-wine drinkers. And I had a task to fill - they wanted to drink wine, and they wanted it to be good. Fortunately for me, we have a TON of great wine at unbeatable price points.

When it came to choosing the wines, I knew a few guys would only drink sweet wine, so I decided to bring a few different bottles.

First up was the 2009 Selbach Oster Graacher Domprost Riesling Auslese from Germany. Let me be the first to say that if you haven't had this wine, it is a must! I am not usually a huge fan of sweet wines, but this hit the spot! Scoring 92 points from Robert Parker, it not only tastes incredible, but it's also affordable, priced at just $27.99. A dessert wine that in my opinion could be enjoyed with the spicy foods from India or Thailand, it brought a long finish and a yearning for more. Sadly, I only brought one bottle.

Moving onto Alsace, the next on the list was the 2008 Zind Humbrecht

    2003 d’Armailhac: Mouton Rothschild’s Other Wine

Mouton Rothschilds Other WineIn our lives there are times when one opens a bottle of wine and enjoys it and thinks “that was nice.”  Then there are times in which a person may find themselves thinking how incredibly fortunate and lucky they are to try this fermented grape juice.  It may have traveled halfway across the world to get into your possession; it’s a beverage that has surrounded cultures from ancient Romans to modern day Michelin restaurants.  Over the weekend, I had the latter experience.  When I reflect on all of the wine that I’ve experienced, it amazes me!

Last year right around this time, I asked the love of my life to spend hopefully a thousand years of laughter and joy together.  Fortunately for me, she said yes.  We decided to celebrate this great moment by taking a weekend away from everyday life and escape to the far reaches of southern PA to a place called Nemacolin Woodlands.  A beautiful 3,000 acre resort and spa filled

  5. A World-Class Riesling for a STEAL of a Price!

    A World-Class Riesling for a STEAL of a Price!

    World Class Riesling

Rieslings under $100 rarely get ‘good’ scores from respected wine reviewers.  Rieslings under $50 rarely get ‘outstanding’ scores from one of the most respected names in wine. The 2011 Joh Jos Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett received a 95 Point score from none other than John Gilman, editor of “Views from the Cellar.”  I’d also like to add that this wine was also given 93 points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.

Should I tell you the price yet?  I think I’ll hold off for now…

    Vintage
2011 will go down in history as one of the greatest Riesling vintages of all time.  Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate quotes:

“…Make no mistake: if not a "vintage of the century"…2011 is an extremely fine Riesling year that can boast quite a few truly extraordinary successes across a range of styles.”

  6. Something from the Northern Rhone? Look No Further!

Something from the Northern Rhone? Look No Further!

Northern RhoneAs a Northern Rhone wine lover and resident guru, my clients often ask me my personal opinions on their selections from this gorgeous yet misunderstood region.  I inevitably end up discussing the wines from Delas, a fabulous producer, at some point.  Here are some of the particulars: In 1835, Charles Audibert and Philippe Delas purchased a wine merchant company in Tournon-sur-Rhone.  Previously called Maison Junique, they renamed it Audibert and Delas.  The links between the two familes would be pulled ever tighter when the two Delas sons, Henri and Florentin, married two Audibert daughters.  In 1924, Henri and Florentin took over as managers of the company whose name then changed to Delas Frères.

They constantly developed the business, both on the merchant side and by acquiring vineyards in Chateauneuf du Pape and Hermitage.  This helped ensure a constant production of quality wines.  After the war in 1945, the wines of Delas

  7. The Vintage Variable

There is a general assumption that all French wines worth drinking are expensive, that there are no worthy wines of value from the country that can claim home to the largest number of 'noble grapes'. Today, this couldn't be further from the truth as a number of savvy shoppers are paying close attention to the wines of Languedoc Roussillon. One such wine is Chimeres, a proprietary blend from Chateau Saint-Roch. Though originally focused on Lirac and the Rhone, the winemakers' wine from Cotes du Roussillon has been receiving plenty of attention of late, with a score of 92 points from Wine Advocate for both the '06 and '07 vintage to show for it.

So when a producer pays equal attention in the vineyard and winery, what is the major variable in the wines? The vintage. Recently, we tasted the '06 and '07 wines, both in stock, both only $14.95. So with both having received the same score, which vintage should one choose...why not both? The '06 expresses minerality and pepper, with a chocolate

  8. 2004 Brunellos Blind Tasting

What a great opportunity to taste 13 of the best Brunello producers from one of the best vintages in history! And the critics are right about 04 Brunello - the WOW factor is definitely there and in full effect.

Now, true to a blind tasting, we did not know which wines were being poured in the glass?. Only that it was 2004 Brunello di Montalcino. We simply wrote notes for each wine we tasted and then decided which Brunello we liked the best and rated them. At the end of this remarkable tasting, we found out which wines we liked the best, everyone's favorite, etc...

So here's a couple of my personal faves:

2004 Ciacci Piccolomini Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso- great nose with beautiful dark fruits, leather, black pepper and a hint of sweet oak. Very powerful with surprising length on the finish. Absolutely delicious!

2004 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino- a wonderful deep garnet

  9. Waterstone - Delivering the Goods

As the saying goes "Write what you know about", I feel compelled to kick-off my writing with one of my all time favorite wines - Waterstone Cabernet Sauvignon.

If you subscribe to our email offers I'm sure you've seen us feature this one but just in case you haven't seen it yet here is a quick version of their story:

Napa Valley nice guys Phillip Zorn and Brent Shortridge decided in 2000 to "create luxury wines at affordable prices".

To that end Phillip and Brent were able to obtain the left over juice from one of the ultra-rare and expensive California Cult producers, finish and bottle the wine themselves under their Waterstone label. There has been much conjecture on whose juice it is - especially from clients that try the wine. But, Phillip and Brent aren't talking - they can't as they have signed an iron-clad non-disclosure agreement.

In March of 2005 I was on the phone with Brent begging for more of the 2002 vintage

  10. 2007 California Pinot Noir - Is it really that good?

    Short answer? Yes!

But it's really more than just good. It's exceptional. Year in and year out the top Pinot Noir producers in California such as Kistler, Aubert, Marcassin etc, make great wines but rarely do you see a vintage that is consistently great across the board. If you are a pinot noir lover this is a vintage you will want to stock up on, trust me!

When describing this vintage, some of the qualities that come to mind for me are fresh, impeccably balanced, soft tannins that almost come across as silky, and overall just a great sense of purity. Winemakers hit it big in this vintage. Exceptional vintages of Pinot Noir come across very infrequently. It's not a secret to any great winemaker that this grape varietal is extremely difficult to grow. But when you have that once in blue moon growing season you have a chance to make world class wines and in 2007 this is precisely what happened. The wonderful thing about this vintage is that while the wines are approachable
