2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vintage Report: A Vintage You Don’t Want to Miss!

2019 Brunello di Montalcino is “…the vintage we’ve all been waiting for,” so “Buckle your seatbelts,” and strap on your helmets because the newest vintage from Montalcino is “…an embarrassment of riches for collectors and fans of the appellation” (Eric Guido, Vinous Media). The hotly anticipated Brunellos have “…definitely lived up to [their] lofty reputation as an excellent vintage across Montalcino” (Kerin O’Keefe). It showcases the extraordinary qualities of Sangiovese, Tuscany’s most famous and beloved grape variety, and its ability to exploit the region’s phenomenal terroir. This “…magical year…” (Giacomo Neri of Casanova di Neri) of “radiance and appeal” (Eric Guido) will likely set a new benchmark for Brunello wines for years to come.

According to Italian wine expert, Kerin O’Keefe, she has “…never tasted so many drop-dead-gorgeous young Brunellos from a single vintage.” She confesses that many of the best wines stopped her in her tracks, generating that “…magical moment

  1. Q&A Session with Michael Twelftree of Two Hands Winery

Q&A Session with Michael Twelftree of Two Hands Winery

Michael Twelftree of Two Hands Winery Daron Watson, one of our private wine consultants, catches up with Michael Twelftree of Two Hands Winery in Australia. As one of the finest producers in not just Australia, but in the world, they have taken a spot on Wine Spectator's list of the Top 100 Wines ten years in a row, and we are amazed at their consistent quality.

Q: So MT, what first brought you into the world of wine?

A: I was 23 and a friend invited me to go with him to a wine shop to buy a few cases of wine. There was a (free) tasting going on and this wonderful world unfolded right in front of my eyes.

Q: When did you first meet Richard Mintz and when did you decide it was time to start your own winery?

A: I met Richard at the time we were both finishing up at school and we were about

  2. Refreshing, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc for Spring!

Refreshing, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc for Spring!

New Zealand Sauvignon BlancWhen one refers to New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, I can bet that most of us have heard of Cloudy Bay. I consider it a great entry-level table wine with high production and consistent quality.

Meet James and Ivan: the dynamic duo behind Dog Point Vineyards.

    Estate
Owners James and Ivan met while working at Cloudy Bay Vineyards: James the former oenologist and Ivan the viticulturist. They quickly established a long-term friendship after finding that they share the same aspirations regarding a 'hands on' approach to winemaking. Going into business for no other motivations than to craft small-production, single-block wines, these two launched their first vintage in 2004 and have been major players in the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc scene since.

    Area
Dog Point Vineyards is located in the Wairau Valley in the center of Marlborough's thriving winemaking region.

  3. Sicilian Scuba Tanks For Summertime Soirees!

Sicilian Scuba Tanks For Summertime Soirees!

Sicilian Scuba TanksLast weekend a friend invited my wife and I over for a birthday party.  We were excited to go as he recently built a wood burning oven in his backyard, and we hadn't had an opportunity to stop by and try it out yet.  Multiple pizzas with various toppings would be created, and guests were asked to bring beverages of choice to wash them down.

Naturally I wanted to bring vino, something I'd enjoy, yet wouldn't "waste" on a portion of the guests there that wouldn't appreciate a good bottle.  Immediately I thought of the 2011 Valdibella Nero. It's 100% Nero d'Avola from a Sicilian cooperative that believes in making natural and pure wine from heirloom varietals using organic farming with hands off cellar practices.  Plummy notes of light black fruits dominate with a finish of wild brush herbs and volcanic rock.  Everyone loved it and inquired about purchasing some.  When I told them the price was only $24.95, they were ALL IN.  Oh yeah,

  4. My Top 5 White Wine Selections for Summer

My Top 5 White Wine Selections for Summer

    Louis Latour Corton Charlemagne

It’s finally that time of year when the flowers start to blossom, and the temperature outside is increasing every day.  I’m sure many people start to think about the grass cutting they’ll have to do and the gardens they’re going to plant, but all I can think about is what I will stock my wine fridge with!

I love searching our vast inventory, seeing the new purchases that we’ve made and trying to figure out what wines to stock for the new seasons. I usually go with four or five selections for the spring/summer season, and I tend to go with all whites. I also like to have a Rose on hand as well. Listed below are my selections with my comments for each. Hope you enjoy!

  5. A White Wine from Montelena? Yes!

A White Wine from Montelena? Yes!

White Wine from Chateau MontelenaOn the heels of Nick’s recent Top 5 Whites for the summer, I have to bring the 2010 Montelena Chardonnay to your attention.  We just received this, so let’s include this one as a top summer selection and grow Nick’s list to 6!

This chardonnay deserves to stand right beside the potentially more well known reds from Montelena.

Antonio Galloni began his review stating the wine is “gorgeous.”  I think this is the perfect descriptor.  It’s citrusy (grapefruit, lemon zest) and floral with the crispness I like in a chardonnay.  There isn’t a lot of oak in this wine, but it still maintains solid body.  With only subtle oak (and not overdone with oiliness) along with some mineral-like elements that I noticed closer to the finish, this is a California chardonnay that potentially could be mistaken for an excellent white Burgundy in a blind tasting…without a white Burgundy price!
